The most common symptoms of a bed bug bite include:

• Large, itchy welts that can be up to eight inches across

• Skin rashes that may look like hives.

Bed Bug symptoms include a red bump or welt, these are often accompanied by an intense itching feeling. These bumps and welts occur because of an allergic reaction to the bed bugs saliva. It is hard to tell the difference usually between a bed bug bite and that of a mosquito, usually a bed bug bite will last longer. It can take up to nine days for bed bug bites to appear on the body and in many cases there will be sequential bites in the same area. This happens when the bed bug is disturbed during feeding and it moves a little ways before settling down to feed again.

People who experience bed bug bites vary in how their body reacts to them. In rare cases people can become nauseous and feel ill. In many people there are no visible bed bug symptoms so it can make it much harder to know the cause.

It is important to try and resist itching the bites because this can cause scarring or infections to occur.

Bed Bugs like places that have textiles and upholstered furniture and this generally means they gather in beds. You can find bed bugs in the mattress, box spring and on the bed frame. You can try and identify bed bugs that may be living on or near your bed. Look for their fecal stains, egg cases and their shed skins in places near your bed such as crevices and cracks. Bed bugs can also be found in places such as under wallpaper, behind picture frames, in couches and other furniture.

There are a number of things you can do to help treat bed bugs.

1. Cleaning. You can help reduce the amount of bed bugs in a room just by giving it a very through clean, it should be noted however that just simply vacuuming a room won’t be enough to get rid of any bed bugs entirely. They are very good at hiding. Make sure you seal up any cracks, holes, areas around electrical outlets that bed bugs may be living in using caulk.

2. Vacuum the entire room thoroughly.

3. Scrub any furniture and other surfaces in the room. If you can you should dismantle any furniture you have in the room so you can get in every nook and cranny where the bed bugs may be living.

4. If you have been bitten you can get a product that will eliminate the itching. There are number of products on the market that help relive the itch that comes from insect bites. You could also try using calimine lotion.

There is a bed bug liquid spray called Steri-Fab that can be used to kill off bed bugs. This is a good product to take with you if you’re going away on vacation and spray on the bed in the hotels you are staying in. I don’t recommend you use this as a long term solution in your own home however. Bed bugs feed very infrequently so you’re very unlikely to kill them all using Steri-Fab. The spray also won’t kill the eggs so you will still have an infestation later on even if you manage to kill the adults using the spray.

Steri-Fabs main in ingredients are alcohol and pyrethroid. You will find Pyrethroids in a lot of insecticides due to the fact they will kill any insects that come in to contact with it but is mostly harmless for humans. Steri-Fab works well on bed bugs with one study showing a 100% kill rate with adult bed bugs. Even if the Pyrethroids don’t kill them off the bed bugs will die from contact with the alcohol. So if you’re looking for a good bed bugs spray give Steri-Fab a try.
